Applications are now open for the 2011 Peter Whittingham Jazz Award, one of the most prestigious awards available in UK jazz. The annual award of £4,000, offered by the Musicians Benevolent Fund, is available for a creative jazz project.
Recipients - emerging individual jazz musicians, or groups showing talent and innovation - will also benefit from career guidance from the Musicians' Union. Over the past twenty years it has been awarded to many of today’s leading jazz musicians, providing crucial help at the start of their careers.
The award is open to musicians who are studying full-time on a jazz course in the UK or within the first two years of starting their professional career.
Previous award recipients include include Errollyn Wallen, Dave O’Higgins, Soweto Kinch, Gwilym Simcock, Empirical and 2009 Mercury Prize nominees Led Bib. Last year's winners were 5-piece band WorldService Project.
The closing date for applications is Friday 11 November and auditions will take place at The Premises Studios, Hackney Road, London on Wednesday 7 December 2011.
