Jackie Clifton appointed MBE

In recognition of her tireless work for equal access and opportunities for visually impaired musicians, Jacqueline Clifton has been appointed an MBE.

Jackie founded Musicians in Focus with the help of the Musicians Benevolent Fund after her own sight was damaged fifteen years ago. The organisation promotes advancements in access to music technology and education, giving advice and support to many musicians of all ages who have impaired vision.

Musicians in Focus has provided workshops and events around the UK both for musicians, teachers, support workers and educationalists. Many students have gone on to music degree courses with support to complete undergraduate and postgraduate studies.

As the Royal College of Music's Research Fellow in Music and Visual Impairment, Jackie also founded the special scheme for Young Visually Impaired Musicians at the College's Junior Department. The scheme provides an opportunity for motivated visually impaired students of all musical abilities to study music in an exciting and supportive environment. Students have the chance to be taught by leading specialists for one-to-one lessons as well as group work.

Now based in Cardiff, similar work at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama has led to regular workshops with support for young musicians on its Junior Music and Access courses. A 3-day Summer School for visually impaired musicians of all ages is scheduled for this coming August.

Jackie's award is testament to the hard work and dedication she has shown in encouraging other visually impaired musicians, and we offer her our warmest congratulations for this honour.
