Stories of our work
David Hooper
Bassoonist David Hooper found a unique way to raise money for us in
2009. He took to the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square as part of
Antony Gormley’s ‘One and Other’ Project which saw members of the
public becoming living statues for 100 hours.
David thought this was the perfect opportunity to promote bassoon playing which he has enjoyed since the age of 15. He started out learning the piano aged 6 and then took up the clarinet at 15 however he says that it wasn’t until he learnt the bassoon that he really fell in love with music.
Fundraising
"As a musician, raising money for the Musicians Benevolent Fund seemed like the natural fit."

“ I wanted to play my bassoon on the Plinth but realised that was mostly about me enjoying myself so I wanted to do something worthwhile at the same time. Being a musician, raising money for the Musicians Benevolent Fund seemed like a natural fit.”
David enjoys playing with Windsor and Maidenhead Symphony Orchestra who rehearse once a week and perform concerts three or four times a year. Many of his fellow players came to support him and collected money and distributed leaflets on our behalf.
