Maggie Teyte Prize and Miriam Licette Scholarships

The Maggie Teyte Prize and Miriam Licette Scholarships place particular emphasis on the interpretation of French mélodie.

Who we can help

These two awards are run as a single award scheme, which is open to female singers in postgraduate vocal study at the British conservatoires, or National Opera Studio.  In addition to a financial award, the recipient of the Maggie Teyte Prize is invited to perform a lunchtime recital in the Crush Room of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London.

The winner of the Maggie Teyte Prize in 2012 was Louise Alder.

Application Process

Application will be by nominations from the major performing colleges and conservatoires only. All information regarding the nomination process will be sent directly to the relevant institutions. We cannot accept applications from individuals.

The next auditions for the Maggie Teyte Prize and Miriam Licette Scholarships will take place in early 2013.

History of the Maggie Teyte Prize and Miriam Licette Scholarships

Maggie Teyte DBE (1888–1976) was an English soprano and interpreter of French Art Song. In 1968, she founded the Maggie Teyte Prize. A highlight of her career was being cast by Debussy to play Mélisande in Pelléas et Mélisande. To prepare, she studied with Debussy, becoming the only singer ever to be accompanied by him on the piano with an orchestra in public.

Miriam Lycett (1885-1969) was a soprano. She was the first English singer to study with Mathilde Marchesi in Paris.With fond memories of her time there, she requested that the residue of her estate be used to create an annual scholarship for advanced study in Paris - the Miriam Licette.
