Stories of our work
Edward Leech
The Postgraduate Performance awards are offered to outstandingly talented instrumentalists and singers to help with full-time study costs or towards the costs of buying a musical instrument. Individual awards range from £1,000 to £5,000 and include a number of prestigious named scholarships.
One named scholarship is the Charles Leggett Award of £5,000 for exceptionally talented brass and woodwind soloists. Charles Leggett (1874 - 1934) was born in England and was regarded as one of the world’s finest cornet players of the time.
In 2009 tuba player Edward Leech received the
Charles Leggett Award which has enabled him to study at the Royal Academy of Music. This was following his studies at the Royal Northern College of Music where he achieved a first class honours degree.
“ My performing career has really taken off since being given the award. I have had several concerto opportunities and been involved in some great performances. I am in no doubt that I would not have been able to manage this without your help and support.”
Having achieved distinction in his LRSM diploma in 2009, Edward is aiming to play tuba professionally. He has performed many concertos including one with the European Youth Music Festival Symphony Orchestra. In 2010 he will be performing two specially commissioned works, one a concerto. Edward was overall winner at the 2010 Newark Brass Festival competition, came second in the Marlow International Concerto competition open wind class and was twice a finalist at the British Open Solo competition. Outside the Academy he is involving himself in music education projects and workshops for children.
