Stories of our work
Sherika Sherard

The Songwriting Awards promote outstandingly talented young songwriters. The Awards are open to students who are studying on popular and commercial music degree courses in universities and colleges throughout the UK.

Specially selected finalists compete at an annual Showcase in front of a high profile panel. They compete for the main award of £5,000, which is to be used for a creative songwriting project.

18 year old Sherika Sherard was the 2009 recipient, impressing songwriting legend Guy Chambers, 2009 Ivor Novello Songwriter of the Year Eg White, and well-known artist ‘Betty Boo’ (Alison Clarkson). They were joined by David Stark, founder of SongLink International and Tony Moore, the man responsible for creating the Kashmir Klub and The Bedford, where the showcase was held.

“I am so happy to be part of such a great award and to be linked to your charity as an artist. Your award will give me the confidence to write more and try new things as well as buy vital equipment...I couldn’t do this without you!”

Born and raised in South London, singer-songwriter Sherika Sherard has been songwriting from the age of 14. In 2008 she was crowned ‘London’s Best Solo Act in the competition ‘Live and Unsigned’. Sherika is in her first year of the commercial music performance course at Westminster University and will use the award to buy new songwriting equipment and record an acoustic album.

Sherika joins well known artists in receiving this award, such as RnB singer Hannah Rei and ‘The Wombats’, who have helped firmly establish the Songwriting Awards in the UK Songwriting Industry.
