Born and raised in South Yorkshire, Andrew Woodhead is an award winning composer and musician working across a wide variety of contexts, taking in jazz, free improvisation, electronica, folk and new music.
He is a highly active member of Birmingham’s vibrant creative music scene and also curates Improvised Music concert series Fizzle, which enjoys a strong reputation amongst musicians and audiences. Previous guests at Fizzle include Peter Evans, Okkyung Lee, John Edwards, Peter Brotzmann and Lori Freedman.
Projects he is involved with include electro-acoustic duo ELDA with Aaron Diaz, Sarah Farmer’s SPACETIMEBAND and Birmingham Improvisers Orchestra. As well as performing solo on both acoustic piano and live electronics, Andrew has also collaborated in improvised settings with Olie Brice, Hannah Marshall, Paul Dunmall, Kim Macari, Mark Sanders, Annie Mahtani, Chris Mapp, Ole Mofjell, Natalie Sandtorv, Percy Pursglove, Jacob Garchik and many more.
His debut solo album Pocket Piano Improvisations was released in 2016, followed by 2019’s Shiny/Things with ELDA and special guest Kari Eskild Havenstrøm. Through solo tours, ELDA and other projects he has performed at Jazz Festivals including Bratislava, Cheltenham and Manchester and venues taking in Symphony Hall Birmingham, Flykingen Stockholm and Dokkhuset Scene Trondheim.
