Charlotte Bartley is a British born clarinettist. She is a post graduate scholar at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London where she is studying an MMus in Orchestral Artistry in classical clarinet, taught by Andrew Marriner, principal clarinet of the London Symphony Orchestra and Joy Farrall, principal clarinet of the Britten Sinfonia. She also studies period clarinet with Jane Booth, Eb clarinet with Jenny McLaren and bass clarinet with Rob Ault.
Charlotte is grateful for the support of Guildhall School of Music and Drama as a postgraduate scholar she is also a Help Musician’s UK Supported Artist for 2017 as well as recently being appointed a Help Musician's UK Supported Artist for 2018 - 2019. Charlotte has also been awarded a bursary from the Tillet Trust & Colin Keer Trust. She graduated from The Guildhall School in 2017 with a BMus in Classical Clarinet and Recorder, taking First Class Honours. Charlotte has recently performed with the Britten Sinfonia in collaboration with Orchestre de Picardie. This year Charlotte has performed as Principal Clarinet with the Guildhall Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Adrian Leaper, Vassiliy Sinaisky and Pietari Inkenin as principal clarinet and with Dominic Wheeler as bass clarinet. She plays as principal clarinet with the Adoramus Orchestra and has also had the opportunity to play with them as a soloist. In previous years she has played with the Janus Ensemble and the Arch Sinfonia and HashtagOpera.
In 2018 Charlotte has performed in the BBC Radio 3 broadcast: Total Immersion, Leonard Bernstein as a soloist playing the clarinet sonata. She has recently been selected as a Yamaha Clarinet Scholarship Competition finalist, performing in late February. She regularly performs chamber music and was selected to be part of the BBC Immersion project ‘Julian Anderson at 50’ which was broadcast on BBC Radio 3. She enjoys the challenge of new music and performs from time to time with the Guildhall new music ensemble UBU, most recently playing the bass clarinet part of Ligeti’s Kammerconcert. In the summer of 2017 Charlotte performed in the live rounds of ‘Gheorghe Dima’ International Music Competition and performed in masterclasses with Tibor Reman and Valentin Uryupin. She has played with a number of smaller ensembles within Europe including at the Association Musicale de Combret sur Rance in 2016 and at the Guildford Music Society in 2015.
Teaching and outreach work are an important part of Charlotte’s life: she is a trustee of the Wind-Up Penguin Theatre Company and teaches at Newham Music.
Prior to undergraduate study, Charlotte was a Specialist Musician at Wells Cathedral School. She studied with Dr Kevin Murphy and Timothy Orpen on clarinet and Kati Boosey on recorder. Charlotte began her instrumental study aged 10 with Margaret Archibald and subsequently spent a year at Junior Guildhall studying with Neyire Ashworth (clarinet) and Ian Wilson (recorder). As a child Charlotte was in The National Children’s Orchestra Great Britain where she played 1st clarinet.
