1st Prizewinner and Audience Prizewinner at the 9th Trondheim International Chamber Music Competition in 2017, with performances hailed as “superb storytelling by four great communicators" by the Strad Magazine, the Maxwell Quartet is rapidly emerging as one of Britain's finest young string quartets, with a strong connection to their folk music heritage and a commitment to bringing together wide-ranging projects and programmes to expand the string quartet repertoire. The quartet tours widely across the UK, Europe and the United States, with their New York debut in 2019 described by the New York Times as “full of wit, charisma and a sense of adventure”. The quartet’s debut CD, featuring Haydn’s Opus 71 quartets alongside their own Scottish traditional music arrangements, was released in March 2019 on Linn Records to widespread critical acclaim and made Number 3 in the Classical Specialist Chart in its first week of release. The quartet is loaned fine violins from the Harrison Frank Foundation; a viola by J.B Vuillaume, and a cello by Francesco Ruggieri, on loan from private benefactors.
