Fees and contracts

Knowing how much to charge, or what level of fee to accept, can be a minefield. Becoming a member of a professional body – such as the Musicians' Union (MU) or the Incorporated Society of Musicians (ISM) – can give you access to specialist advice (including legal advice) and guidance only available to members.

The ISM publishes statistics on musicians’ fees following periodic surveys of the profession. The Musicians Union has published a 'Fair Play Guide’ offering advice on accepting unpaid engagements or gigs where you’re expected take a financial risk.

The MU and ISM may also be able to offer legal advice on contracts – they have downloadable resources (including sample contracts) for members.
