Busy year for our Help & Advice team

Our Help & Advice team had a busy 2015, offering support to musicians across a range of genres all throughout the country. In total, the team provided grants to 931 musicians, in addition to a range of helpful advice over the phone.

One of the musicians we helped was Cheryl Law, a freelance viola player working predominately with the Halle Orchetra, BBC Philharmonic and CBSO. In April last year she suffered a fall whilst climbing and broke her back, being told she may never walk again. We assisted Cheryl through three weeks of intensive surgery which saw her prognosis improve. Since then, she’s made an incredible recovery.

In 2015 we also responded to mental health issues in the music industry, which was covered extensively in the media. We’ll be building on this even further in 2016, helping musicians finding the right support in partnership with our partners, including BAPAM.

In addition to helping musicians through times of hardship, in November we launched our #HearForMusicians hearing campaign, in response to our survey results that told us musicians are four times more likely to suffer hearing damage. In 2016 we’re expanding our hearing campaign nationally, working with musicians, experts and health care professionals to deliver an exciting programme of events.
