Celebrating music and musicians at the Festival of Saint Cecilia

Come and experience an exciting new commission at the Festival of Saint Cecilia.

Join us at Westminster Cathedral on Wednesday 19 November for the world premiere of a new anthem by award winning composer Cheryl Frances-Hoad, who joins an impressive roster of British composers we’ve been commissioning since 1946.

Described by The Times as “a remarkable talent”, Cheryl is the youngest composer to win two awards in the same year at the BASCA British Composer Awards for her setting of Psalm 1 and solo piano piece Stolen Rhythm. Her work has been performed across the UK in festivals and prestigious venues including the Wigmore Hall and her latest work will be premiered at Westminster Cathedral with the united choral forces of Westminster Cathedral Choir, St Paul’s Cathedral Choir and Westminster Abbey choir.

We were able to commission Cheryl with the support of the RVW Trust and her setting of Psalm 6, O Lord, rebuke me not, is the 64th piece in a long line of anthems written for the Festival.

Ralph Vaughan Williams composed the first back in 1947 and other composers to have graced the list of commissionees include Arthur Bliss (1974, 1977), Gerald Finzi (1951, 1981), John Tavener (1992), James Macmillan (1994), Judith Bingham (1997), John Rutter (1998), Roxanna Panufnik (2000) and our President, Peter Maxwell-Davies (2005), to name just a few.

Come and join on Wednesday 19 November at Westminster Cathedral to celebrate music and musicians with this brand new piece of music. Tickets for the Service are free and can be booked via our online shop or you can call us on 020 7239 9114.

Please consider making a donation with your booking. Last year we helped more than 2,000 musicians who were either going through a crisis, needed help in later life or support as emerging talent. Your support will make a real difference.

Take a look at the list of commissions and their composers and help us continue to support the creation of new music.
