Help Musicians partners with Music Support to give thousands of musicians free access to mental health support app

Thrive app bannerAnnounced as part of Mental Health Awareness Week 2020, Help Musicians has partnered with Music Support to offer 4,500 musicians free access to the NHS-approved mental health support app Thrive.

A recent Help Musicians survey saw over 80% of respondents confirm that the current crisis is having an impact on their wellbeing, signalling a need to invest in early detection and preventative mental health support for musicians.

Thrive is the UK’s only NHS-approved app focused on the prevention and early detection of common mental health conditions. The app offers 24/7 support for mental health and wellbeing, helping users manage common disorders such as anxiety and depression. As well as coping mechanisms and activity sessions, Thrive users can also access live, one-to-one coaching sessions with qualified coaches and set goals to help with focus.

The addition of Thrive further bolsters the charity’s mental health support, with its flagship listening ear and support service, Music Minds Matter, continuing to be available around the clock for musicians struggling to cope.

Claire Gevaux
, Help Musicians Director of Programme, said: “We’re incredibly pleased to partner with Music Support to help extend the reach of this vital app and ensure even more musicians have the tools they need to invest in their mental health. Our research shows that sustaining a healthy career in music is a delicate balance between creativity, business and wellbeing and we believe the addition of free access to Thrive is a valuable part of managing that equilibrium. Help Musicians has been supporting musicians for nearly 100 years, but the financial hardship brought about by the Covid-19 crisis presents a uniquely difficult situation that can be interlinked with mental health challenges. Along with our Music Minds Matter service, we are proud to be offering both preventative and crisis support for mental health.”

Eric Mtungwazi, Managing Director, Music Support, said: “Music Support is proud to partner with Help Musicians in this initiative that will help thousands of vulnerable musicians across the country during this difficult time.  Our aim is to make the “ask” and access for help as easy as possible for peers working in the music industry.  Thrive provides us with an opportunity to do just that in an effective way during and post-lockdown.
