Musical theatre talent shines at this year’s awards

One of the highlights of the Talent Programme team’s year is the annual Ian Fleming Musical Theatre Awards. The awards offer funding to talented young singers on musical theatre degree and postgraduate courses.

Colleges nominated 35 students and after a shortlisting process assisted by Book of Mormon Musical Director Nick Finlow, 19 students were invited to a live audition.

Auditions were held at the 1901 Arts Club on 29 June and we were once again delighted to have a great list of musical theatre stars on our selection panel. This year students auditioned for  John Owen Jones (pictured), best known for leading roles in Les Miserables and The Phantom of the Opera, prolific musical director Catherine Jayes who recently worked on Merrily We Roll Along at the Menier Chocolate Factory, Claire Moore well known as Christine in the original cast Phantom of the Opera and who recently appeared alongside our final panel member Nicola Sloane in London Road.

This year’s Ian Fleming Musical Theatre Award recipients are:

  • Elissa Churchill (Royal Academy of Music)
  • Matthew McDonald (Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts)
  • Ryan Heenan (Royal Central School of Speech and Drama)
  • Kirsty Ingram (Arts Educational Schools)
  • Lauren Lockley (London School of Musical Theatre)
  • Holly Sumpton (Royal Central School of Speech and Drama)
  • Laila Zaidi (Arts Educational Schools)

This year we are also pleased to support trainee musical director Oliver Rew with a Lesley Hayes Award.

One of the auditionees, Kirsty Ingram (pictured), says: ‘I am delighted and honoured to have been offered a Help Musicians UK Fleming Award and I am extremely grateful to accept it as it will help enormously to support me in my final year of training at ArtsEd’.

We wish all the singers the best of luck with their studies and will be looking out for them in the future!
