Rising talent awarded at musical theatre awards

Last week we had an enjoyable day at our Musical Theatre Awards (supported by the Ian Fleming Charitable Trust) at the Royal College of Music. These awards are for students studying musical theatre either going into their 3rd year or onto postgraduate study. Our panellists were Jemma Alexander, musical director Laurie Perkins, Ian McLarnon and our chair was Tracie Bennett. They gave valuable advice and encouragement throughout all auditions which provided these students with a fantastic learning experience whatever their final results were.

We auditioned students from Royal Academy of Music, Urdang Academy, Trinity Laban, London School of Musical Theatre, Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Mountview Academy, Central School of Speech and Drama, Guildford School of Acting and Arts Educational Schools.

We made 9 awards ranging from £1,500 to £5,000. Award recipients include Emily-Mae Walker, Tarinn Callender, Mari McGinlay, Miriam Lee, Tom Winfield, Barney Wilkinson, Emma Torrens, John Lumsden and Luke Hall.

Award Holder, Tom Winfield (pictured), who received £5,000 for his next year of study said:

“I cannot express enough gratitude! This means the absolute world to me and will be the biggest help for next year!”

Emma Torrens wrote in her biography that: “I look forward to what other adventures this next year has and I am forever grateful to Help Musicians UK for giving me the gift of continuing in this ridiculously wonderful industry.”

Congratulations to all award holders and we wish all students every success in their next year of study.
