Sir David Willcocks Memorial Concert

The team at Help Musicians UK were incredibly sad to hear the news of Sir David Willcocks who passed away on 17 September 2015. Sir David was a cherished and admired friend of the charity for over 40 years.

Spending 17 years as director of music at King’s College Cambridge and 38 years leading the Bach Choir, Sir David was a man of immense valour in both musical and military fields. He earned an immediate MC during his war service in Normandy and as a choirmaster he redefined British choral music. He was appointed CBE in 1971 and was knighted shortly after in 1977.

Sir David Willcocks1Sir David was an enthusiastic supporter of Help Musicians UK and was a regular at many events, including the Festival of St Cecilia which was celebrated at St Paul's Cathedral this week. He started out as a member of our Board, then a member of the Executive Committee from 1976. He then became Chairman of the Advisory Council from 1989 – 2009. He retired from the Advisory Council in 2015.

This afternoon at 3pm there will be a Memorial Concert for Sir David, given by the choir of King's College Cambridge in King's chapel. The memorial concert falls very appropriately on St. Cecilia's Day.

Tickets are fully allocated, however the Memorial Concert is being recorded by the BBC and will be broadcast on Radio 3 at 7.30pm on Tuesday 1st December.
