Susan Bullock, Edward Seckerson and Christopher Glynn in a summer evening of music and words

The soprano Susan Bullock has enjoyed an illustrious career performing in major opera houses across the world. On July 11 at the Swiss Church in Covent Garden, sixty of our friends and supporters enjoyed an evening with Sue. She was joined by Edward Seckerson, writer and broadcaster, and pianist Christopher Glynn.

The evening began with an informal interview between Edward and Sue (pictured right), which gave a fascinating insight into the life of an opera singer. Topics ranged from Sue’s early years at the English National Opera to her appearance at the Olympic Games in 2012. “I’m a girl from Cheshire who never thought I’d be working in Tokyo, Sydney, Milan and other great cities. I’ve had amazing opportunities”.

Sue then sung some of her favourite songs, accompanied by Chris Glynn. The highlight was the hilarious ‘A word in my ear’ by Flanders and Swann; the audience laughed uproariously as they got a rare opportunity to hear Sue in non-opera mode.

The evening finished with an appearance from Mick Doran, Principal Percussionist at the ENO, who has enjoyed a 25 year career as a musician. Last year he was diagnosed with cancer, and The Musicians Benevolent Fund was able to support Mick through this difficult time. Mick spoke movingly of his experience and gratitude for the support he received.

We would like to thank Susan Bullock, Edward Seckerson, Chris Glynn and Mick Doran for a wonderful evening. A huge thank you also to everyone who donates and provides vital support to help musicians in crisis like Mick.
