Support with applying

Some people find it difficult to complete forms, especially if you feel unwell. Our team are able to support with completing the form over the phone. If you would like some help, please contact our team: advice@musicmindsmatter.org.uk and we will arrange to call you.

Like many charities, we have to have clear rules in place to make sure our funds go towards those we are here to support. Our criteria are set to enable us to benefit as many people as we can, and we are continually seeking financial support that would enable us to support more people.

Our current rules are that we will provide funded care to:

  • People working in music: this means you have been earning 40% or more of your income from one or more types of eligible work in music for two or more years

Regrettably, at this time we are not able to support those earning above £40,000 and those with more than £10,000 in savings (except for special savings exceptions which you can read about below).

Many people who make income from music do so through multiple income streams and we have talked with people across music to capture as many types as income as possible, so we can help as many people as possible. You can see the full list of eligible income here.

If you are not sure if your income is eligible, we encourage you to speak to BAPAM before you start your application so we can give you best guidance possible.

  • Money set aside for known tax liabilities due within the next 12 months where you can provide proof of the tax amount due — in this case we will exclude savings up to the amount of your tax liabilities from the £10,000 savings limit
  • Money for the purchase of a new main home for you to live in where you can provide a memorandum of sale or essential structural maintenance on your home where you can provide evidence of your need, a quote and proof that work will start within 6 months – in this case we will exclude savings up to the cost of the purchase or works from the £10,000 savings limit
  • Money to purchase essential medical or care equipment where you can provide evidence of your need, proof of cost and proof that it will be paid for within the next 6 months – in this case we will exclude savings up to the cost of the equipment from the £10,000 savings limit
  • Up to £15,000 savings for care home fees — if you are actively seeking a care home placement to begin within 24 months of applying and can provide a personalised care home fees statement (maximum £25,000 savings in total)
  • Up to £15,000 savings for parental or carer leave — if you are due to take a care break from work within the next six months (maximum £25,000 savings total)

What you will need to complete this form

You will need:

  • A document dated within the last 12 months with your name on it that shows income from music, such as pay slip, contract for music work, royalty statement, streaming revenue statement etc. – this is prove you work in music
  • Any links that can prove you work in music such as links to streaming platforms with your music, social media, your LinkedIn account, etc.

If you stopped or took a break from working in music within the last 2 years due to disability, illness or injury but in the two years before that earnt at least 40% of your income from music and:

  • You are in currently receipt of health-related disability benefits or,
  • Have medical evidence to show you cannot work for at least 6 months due to illness or injury

then you can apply for support even if you didn’t earn 40% of your income from music in the most recent 24-month period.

Health-related benefits are PIP (England, Wales and NI); Adult Disability Payment (Scotland), LCWRA within Universal Credit. Please note, we review criteria periodically in line with Government changes to disability benefits reforms.

It must be from a medical professional registered with the relevant professional body, be dated and state how long you are unable to work- for example a GP fit note or a letter confirming recovery period from an operation. If the period you are out of work has now ended, to apply with this criteria it must have lasted a minimum of 6 months and ended no more than 6 months ago.

If you have taken maternity, paternity or shared parental leave within the last 12 months but in the 24 months before your leave earnt at least 40% of your income from music you can apply for support even if you didn’t earn 40% of your income from music in the last 12 months.

You will be required to upload your maternity certificate (Matb1 form) dated within the last 12 months.

If in the last 2 years you have reduced or stopped working in music due to caring responsibilities and are in receipt of Carers Allowance and in the 24 months prior to this change you earnt at least 40% of your income from music you can apply for support.

You will be required to upload confirmation of your Carers Allowance dated within the last 3 months.

You will be able to indicate if disability, illness, injury, parental leave or caring responsibilities apply within your application form and upload the relevant evidence. Your eligibility will then be considered in line with the relevant criteria.
