Maddie’s journey in music began in the historic city of Wells, Somerset, where her love for singing first took root. Her growth as an opera singer has been supported in vital ways by Help Musicians.

I don’t come from a musical family, but music was always around,” she reflects. At just six years old, Maddie began singing lessons on the advice of a family member who recognised her natural ability. Her talent quickly flourished, and she soon became a chorister at Wells Cathedral, an experience that shaped the foundation of her classical singing path. Staying on at Wells Cathedral School as a specialist musician, she eventually found herself encouraged by teachers to consider a career in music – something she hadn’t initially imagined.

Her journey led her to the Royal College of Music in London, where she completed both her undergraduate and master’s studies. I didn’t even know classical singing could be a career,” she admits. But as she explored her options and gained confidence, Maddie chose to remain at the College for her master’s in performance. Now, she’s preparing for her next big step – joining the Royal Academy of Music’s opera school. It’s about continuing to learn and grow, especially when you’re surrounded by incredible people,” she says of her decision to continue her studies.

Maddie’s growth as an opera singer has been supported in vital ways by Help Musicians. After an initial unsuccessful application, she reapplied and received funding for her second year of her master’s. Affording the second year would have been impossible without help,” she explains. The support meant I could stay focused on my course rather than constantly worrying about how I’d pay tuition or rent.” This financial relief allowed Maddie to continue her training without sacrificing her wellbeing or performance quality.

Yes, the application is long, but it’s worth every minute. I’d tell anyone thinking about applying – absolutely go for it!”

Beyond the funding, Maddie found Help Musicians to be an approachable organisation. The team was so kind and helpful,” she says. The online portal was clear, and if I ever made a mistake, someone was quick to guide me through it.” She also took full advantage of the charity’s online application resources, which she found invaluable during the process. Yes, the application is long, but it’s worth every minute. I’d tell anyone thinking about applying – absolutely go for it!”

Maddie’s career is already gaining momentum. She recently secured a role as an Emerging Artist with Garsington Opera, performing in The Queen of Spades by Tchaikovsky – her first professional opera contract. It’s such an exciting opportunity, with intensive rehearsals, performances, even professional headshots and seminars,” she shares. Maddie is also a finalist in the prestigious Royal Overseas League competition, with the grand final at Wigmore Hall this July. Thanks to her talent, determination, and the backing of Help Musicians, Maddie’s future in opera is full of promise.
