A collaboration between Preetha Narayanan (Violin) and Tara Franks (cello), string duo Balladeste explore the versatility and sound potential of just two string instruments. With traces of contemporary minimalism, Indian classical and folk, the duo create original compositions that are vibrant and experimental yet melodic and filmic in quality – songs without words with a contemporary alt-folk twist.
Writing through playing and improvising, Balladeste have successfully developed a shared compositional language without notation. Releasing their debut album Relic in September 2017 (Top Pick Album 2018 ‘The Musician’), they have performed at notable venues including National Portrait Gallery, Conway Hall (supporting the OAE), Southbank Centre, CCB- Lisbon, MAXXI- Rome as well as received radio play on BBC3, Resonance FM - The Nest Collective, A World in Music and NTS.
With a collective array of collaborations and commissions including working with visual artist/dancers; Lucy Steggals, Somang Lee, Ruth Pethybridge, and renowned UK artists Kate Tempest, Anoushka Shankar, Talvin Singh, Oi Va Voi, Manu Delago, London Contemporary Orchestra amongst others, their varied work and love of collaboratively creating feeds into their process and performance dynamic as a duo.
They are currently creating their second album with thanks to PRS support.
