Kate Smith is a versatile singer, producer, and workshop leader who has worked in New York, Beijing, and London and is in-demand as a performer of cutting edge opera and music theatre. She studied Classical Voice at Guildhall School of Music and Drama (2015), where she earned her MMus in Leadership (2017), followed by a Fellowship (2018). She often sings in new works of musical theatre, including in Verity Standen’s Undersong (2018), Spitalifields Music Open Call (2018/2019), Antichorus (2016), Re:Sound Music Theatre’s singer-instrumentalist opera, Thousand Furs (2015) and more. Kate was previously regarded as the “singing madame” of Beijing’s cabaret scene, known for her immersive, meticulously-researched period cabarets. As an avid improviser, researcher, and leader, Kate is the creator of The Embodied Voice, a practice combining voice, movement, mindfulness, and improvisation, as well as Artistic Director of THAT!, an ensemble that devises new music using voice and movement. Kate has taught and led workshops for Guildhall School of Music and Drama, The Barbican, Aldeburgh Young Musicians, the BBC and more. As the Founder of Curiosa, Kate also runs her own music and arts retreats in Portugal in the summers.
