Growing up in London amongst a creative family and later studying History of Art, has had a huge impact on Murphy’s creative perspective, approaching music with a fierce multidisciplinary attitude. Inspired by musicians such as Edith Piaf, Serge Gainsbourg and Bill Callahan and providing vocals on Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds’ album ‘Push the Sky Away’ in 2013, Martha’s own solo work similarly looks to push the limits of contemporary musical norms.
Murphy’s interdisciplinary attitude incorporates other mediums such as acting, she has toured the UK with the documentary theatre company she co-founded, I Swear I Saw This, in a one-woman show ‘Two Body Problem’. Murphy is also part of an improvisation collective Ex Mothers Union where she sings and writes lyrics spontaneously.
Recently Murphy has released the score for the enigmatic motion picture The Late Departure, directed by Ivan Krzeszowiec (for which she also coded the interactive website), collaborated with producer Dan Carey on his Quarantine series, featured on Dig That Treasure's (Resonance FM) compilation album: Elevate: In Aid Of Calm and worked with Squid on a number of forthcoming projects.
With the support of Help Musicians' funding I will be able to realise my broadest holistic creative idea yet, in an expansive and cross disciplinary way, taking my music into an increasing number of mediums with the aim to develop a thematic, site-specific album with multiple artistic entities attached.
