Sam is recipient of the Mrs S S Payne Award scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music, where he is taught by Paul Beniston, Gareth Small, Will O'Sullivan and Robert Farley (baroque trumpet and cornett). In 2013, Sam was awarded the Royal Forest of Dean Herbert Howells Society Bursary. He was previously principal trumpet of the National Youth Orchestra of Wales, the National Youth Wind Orchestra of Wales, National Youth Jazz Wales, and a member of the National Children's Orchestra. Sam regularly plays with numerous orchestras in and around London, including as principal trumpet with the Orion Symphony Orchestra and the Young Musicians Symphony Orchestra. He has played under conductors including Semyon Bychov, Ed Gardner, Trevor Pinnock, Jac Van Steen, and Carlo Rizzi.

Previous solo performances have included the Haydn, Arutiunian, and Weinberg Trumpet Concertos, as well as trumpet and organ recitals in Hampton Court Palace and Grantham. Most recently, Sam took part in a series of performances of the Haydn Trumpet Concerto, 3rd movement, with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, as part of the BBC Ten Pieces project. A keen cornettist, Sam has recently returned from a trip to Neresheim Abbey, Germany with the Royal Academy Cornetts and Sackbuts Ensemble, following a trip to North Carolina, USA in 2015. As a baroque trumpeter, Sam frequently performs in the Royal Academy of Music/Kohn Foundation Bach cantata series, as well as with several period instrument groups including the Meridian Ensemble and Apollo Baroque Consort. He also plays frequently in show bands, most recently in performances of Assassins (Arts Educational School), Les Misérables (Christ's Hospital) and Thoroughly Modern Millie (Guildford School of Acting). As a chamber musician, Sam is a founding member of the recently formed brass septet The Tyburn Ensemble, with whom he has already performed at the Academy's David Josefowitz Recital Hall and St. John's Smith Square. Upcoming concerts include Southwark Cathedral, St. Clement Danes, and Regent Hall. Next year, Sam will be commencing postgraduate study at the Academy on an entrance scholarship, as well as being generously supported by Help Musicians UK.
