Tall Trees is a new project by electronic musician, label owner, creative producer and educator, Koichi Samuels, who is based in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Koichi has released and performed under the aliases “Koichi” and “Spires” (Phil Kieran & Koichi Samuels) on labels such as Soma Records, Planet Rhythm, and his own experimental electronic imprint, Resist-AV with 8 collaborative and solo dance-floor focussed electronic music releases in the genre of techno. His most recent project, “Tall Trees” is an ambitious multidisciplinary collaborative project which explores digital art and interactive media with an intricate synth and ambient sound underneath spoken words from a diversity of voices affirming life. The first piece in this project was supported by Sound and Music’s ‘Interpreting Isolation’ award. This was an audiovisual piece in collaboration with video artist Dervla Hillan and brought together voices from young musicians from Belfast, collected remotely, expressing hope and vision beyond the covid-19 pandemic. Tall Trees has also won an award from Future Screens NI to develop an experimental podcast series of nine electronic compositions and monologues in collaboration with scholars, activists and artists. Through the Tall Trees project, Koichi is pushing his studio productions into multi-dimensional audiovisual projects, in collaboration with visual artists and voices from other disciplines to inspire messages of hope and forward vision in this time of change.
