Jo-anne is a creative contemporary cellist and composer, based in London and working across the UK. Her compositions and playing style are sensuous and textural, bringing feeling and emotion to each piece. She is a solo and ensemble performer, with a passion for access and inclusion. Jo-anne directs audience interaction with digital and sensory arts, during live performance and believes the sound, light and vibration from her sparkling purple electric cello is for everyone.
In April 2019 she performed a scratch performance of her ground breaking solo show ‘Defiant Journey’ at Stratford Circus Arts Centre in London. The show brings audiences an innovative and interactive electric cello experience, blending music, storytelling, digital and sensory arts. ‘Defiant Journey’ will start touring across the UK from Autumn 2020.
As a solo artist, Jo-anne has performed at music and disability arts festivals, such as the ‘All in the Mind Festival’, by Fluid Motion Theatre Company, the ‘Funky Llama Festival’ by Theatre Royal Plymouth and at Disability History Month events by Together! 2012 C.I.C.
Jo-anne has composed and performed for writer, poet, performer and activist Penny Pepper for her one woman show ‘Lost in Spaces’, which premiered at Soho Theatre in September 2014 and was followed by a successful UK tour. In 2016 she performed and facilitated audience interaction with music technology for the initial R&D stage of ‘Planted Symphony’ at Olympic Park for Drake Music,
Recently Jo-anne has been part of an ensemble of musicians improvising inside Susan Austin's 360 degree rig for visual/sonic artist Ivan Riches multimedia installation "Surroundings" at Plough Arts Centre and performed for Oliver Cross's film ‘The Visitor’, as part of Drake Music's Radical Sound of the Many at the Barbican.
She is an Associate Musician with Drake Music and a regular contributor to Disability Arts Online.
