Bass-baritone Jonathan May was born in Windsor. After a degree at Newcastle University he studied at the GSMD, the Britten-Pears School and the National Opera Studio. Over the past 25 years he has sung for most of the major UK companies. For the Royal Opera work includes principal roles in Il Barbieri di Siviglia, Fidelio, Madama Butterfly, Elektra, Hamlet, Lohengrin, La Forza del Destino and La Rondine.
Appearing for many years with Welsh National Opera he has sung principal roles in Carmen, Billy Budd, From the House of the Dead, Un Ballo in Maschera, Parsifal, Rigoletto, Don Carlos, Mazepa and Don Giovanni.
Numerous operatic appearances with Scottish Opera include principle roles in Monster, Carmen, Tosca, Madama Butterfly, Rigoletto,Werther, Il Trovatore, Turandot and most recently Pelleas et Melisande. 
Further afield, Jonathan's engagements abroad include work with Opera Vest Norway, Opera Theatre de Metz , Opera Theatre de Rouen, Opera Theatre Company Ireland ,Grande Theatre de Geneve and Japan Society in New York.
Jonathan teaches voice at RCS Junior Conservaoire is Head of Vocal Studies at the University of St Andrews.
